Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does - John 5:19
Jesus is our Prototype. In other words, Jesus reveals to us what human beings are supposed to look like. If we want to know how to properly behave in the world, we need to look to Jesus.
Jesus in turn looked to the Father. Jesus only did what He saw His Father doing. Notice that the verb is in the present tense here. He had a personal, intimate, real-time relationship with His Father which allowed Him to know exactly what to do in every circumstance.
As humans, we can't see God. This is at the root of our problems. If we could see God, then we could follow Him.
Since Jesus is God, He can see God. And since Jesus is man, we can see Him.
So if we want to see God, we have to see Jesus.
And if we want to know which direction to go in life, we need to keep our eyes on Jesus.
It's not enough to simply deny our own will as if all God wanted from us was sacrifice. No, we need to choose His Will - whether it requires from us the greatest sacrifice in the world, or no sacrifice at all.
This means that we must know His Will. And not just in a general way - we need to know His Will on a day-to-day basis in our lives.
God has revealed His Will in scripture. And our efforts to know His Will will be in vain if we do not continually consult scripture. But the full revelation of God's Will comes only through the Person of Jesus Christ.
Thus, the only way for us to come into an intimate knowledge of God's Will is by having a true, tangible relationship with Christ. It needs to become so real that we see Him with our spiritual eyes, so that we can echo His words and say "we only do what we see the Son doing"

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith
