The Mysteries of the Kingdom (Luke 8:10)

He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’ - Luke 8:10

In this passage Jesus is telling His disciples that the mystery of the kingdom has been revealed to them, but that it has been veiled in parables from the multitudes.

Typically our first thought is, why? Why did Jesus hide his message from people? Wasn't His goal to spread His message to the whole world?

Yes, and that is precisely why He kept it hidden.

In the sermon on the mount, Jesus famously warned not to "cast your pearls before swine."

As He was certainly a man of His word, we can be confident Jesus followed His own advice.

There were certain things He spoke to the multitudes, certain things He spoke to His 70 disciples, and then there were certain things He spoke to the 12.

And even within His circle of 12 disciples, He revealed certain things only to Peter, James, and John. And even among these three He seemed to have had a special relationship with John.

God never hides anything from us. He hides things for us.

In life it is not in the finding that we are transformed but in the seeking.

Finding is a one time event, often providing us a short lived spike of exuberance that does very little to fundamentally change us. Seeking, on the other hand, engages our entire person across time and space and re-orients our psyche toward the prize for which we are aiming.

God desires us to seek Him. And He will reveal as much of Himself as he needs in order to draw us into this divine adventure.

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter. Prov 25:2
