An Eternal Weight of Glory (2 Cor 4:17)

"For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison." - 2 Cor 4:17

In this short verse is packed an infinite depth of divine wisdom.

An entire book could be written on this subject but we are going to tackle it in a few hundred words.

We are going to take a rather unconventional approach and look at the verse from end to beginning.

...an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.

This is what we have to look forward to in Christ. Imagine the most glorious, magnificent, awe-some, wonder-ful, thing you've ever witnessed. Maybe it is an experience of a natural phenomenon such as a rainbow, sunset, or a clear starry night. Maybe it is a personal event such as the birth of a child or a wedding day. Maybe it is even a deeply spiritual encounter you have had during this life.

Take all those things, multiply them by 10 trillion times and you still have not approached the level of divine bliss and glory that God desires us to experience eternally at the consummation of this age.

...is preparing for us...

We are being prepared for this eternal weight of glory. The way a beginner in the gym cannot place too many plates on the bar until he has sufficiently trained his muscles, we are not ready yet to experience what God ultimately has in store for us. The greater prepared we are before we reach the finish line, the greater the weight of glory we will be able to handle for all eternity.

For this light momentary affliction...

Compared to the eternal weight of glory awaiting us, all trials and tribulations and sufferings in this present life are considered "light and momentary." Of course many of them do not feel light and momentary. But this is only because we are still mainly focused on this temporal life. When we shift our focus to Eternity we realize that Christ has not only conquered suffering but transfigured it. Not only has He given us a way to endure suffering, He has given us a way to transform it into an eternal storehouse of treasure.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”

1 Cor 2:9
