Blessed are the Pure in Heart (Matt 5:8)

Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God - Matthew 5:8

It is a basic tenet within the Christian faith that God is the basis of all reality. Everything that exists within our physical world is contingent upon God's existence. In other words, God is Fundamental Reality, and everything else that exists emerges from Him.

Hold that thought for one moment and consider another thought: nobody likes to be fooled. Nobody wants to believe untrue things. Nobody wants to see unclearly. Nobody driving a car would rather their windshield be muddy than crystal clear.

If we are able to see clearly, we are able to act effectively. If our vision of reality is distorted or blurred, our ability to act wisely is greatly diminished.

Now if we can say that in the most fundamental sense, God is Reality and we can also acknowledge that we are able to act properly in this world to the extent that we have a clear picture of reality, we can recognize this beatitude from Jesus as the key to an effective and fruitful life.

Our ability to act properly in the world is dependent upon our ability to see God. And our ability to see God, Jesus says, is based upon the purity of our hearts.

What is a pure heart? It is a heart of uncontaminated motive and focused intention. It is a life that has been crucified to the sins of its past and has nothing to do with them anymore. It is a heart that has been washed clean by the blood of Jesus and thus it has been cleansed of all guilt and shame.

A pure heart is not to be confused with a "perfect" heart. A perfect heart is one that is incapable of making mistakes. A pure heart is one that allows God to point out and correct its mistakes.

A pure heart is a heart that is bold enough to desire perfection and understands that this is only found in God. An impure heart is a heart that scoffs at perfection in order to rationalize and protect its own impurity.

Just as gold cannot help but become pure after enduring the refiner's fire, a heart that consistently places itself in the presence of God cannot remain impure.

Everybody wants wisdom, but not everyone wants the type of heart that attracts wisdom. Everybody wants to encounter God, but not everyone wants to have the type of heart that invites encounters with God.

A pure heart is a heart that is so madly in love with the object of its desire that nothing can stand in its way.

Jesus replied:

Love the Lord your God

with all your heart

and with all your soul

and with all your mind.

This is the first and greatest commandment.

Matt 22:37-38
