Death: The Secret to Life (Gal 6:14)

But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world - Galatians 6:14

Can a dead man worry about his life? Can he fear tomorrow? Can he be depressed about yesterday?

Of course not.

In a very real sense, Christians have died to this world. All who have been baptized into Christ have literally (though not physically) died. See Romans 6.

Imagine for a moment that you died tonight in your sleep and woke up the next morning as a spirit. Imagine that the Lord meets you and takes you to heaven where your eyes are opened to the true nature of reality. You see the wonders of heaven and come to terms with just how brief and momentary this life on earth really was.

But instead of letting you stay in heaven, the Lord sends you back to earth in order to tell people about the glories of heaven and the foolishness of materialistic living.

So He sends you back into your body, and you spend the rest of your life equipped with this new and revelatory outlook on life.

After seeing what awaits you in Eternity, do you think you'd have the same sorts of worries and concerns that you had before you died?

Would you be concerned about your retirement? Or would you be storing up as many treasures in heaven as possible while you still had the chance?

Would you get easily offended by people that don't treat you the way you think you deserve? Or would your heart break for them, understanding just how blind they are not knowing what you know?

Would you be terrified of death? Or would you be unable to contain your excitement and joy for the day that you get to enter into eternal bliss?

Would you even be worrying about yourself at all? Or would you like a madman be trying to tell as many people as possible about what awaits them after they die?

The truth of the matter is, you don't have to physically die and go to heaven to have this outlook on life. Every single Christian is supposed to have it already.

We are supposed to literally consider ourselves dead to this world. This means that the types of desires, goals, and dreams that we have should have very little in common with the desires, goals, and dreams of people who consider themselves alive to this world.

Our goals should revolve around Christ and the expansion of His Kingdom. What this will look like specifically in each of our lives will differ. But one thing is clear: if our lives are consumed with the same exact worries, fears, and concerns that the rest of the world has, this is proof that we are utterly confused about what it means to be a Christian.

Tragically, this seems to be the case for most within the Church today.

May it not be true of us.

Jesus said to her,

“I am the resurrection and the life.

Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,

and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

Do you believe this?

John 11:25-26
