Obedience to the Word of God (Matt 14:28-29)

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. - Matthew 14:28-29

Everyone knows it is impossible to walk on water.

But what about when God commands it to be done?

What is more fundamentally real: The laws of physics or the Word of God?

Surely most people in the world would say the laws of physics are more real. But the child of God defines reality in a much different way.

The universe was not created by the laws of physics, but by the Word of Almighty God.

The laws of physics describe reality, but they do not define reality. And even this description is always changing with the advent of each new scientific theory.

For the Christian, however, reality is both described and defined by the eternal and unchanging Word of God.

In this moment, Peter was faced with a simple question: "What do you have more faith in? The laws of physics or the Word of Jesus?"

By stepping out of the boat, Peter demonstrated a transcendent and supernatural faith.

He not only stepped out of his boat but also out of his very paradigm of reality. He temporarily suspended what he had known to be true about how the physical world was supposed to work and took a step of pure faith - stepping out not primarily on the water, but on the Word of Jesus.

Thus, we can gather from this story that there are two vital ingredients we must acquire if we are to live supernatural lives.

1. Faith in the substantive reality of God's Commands.

2. Ears to hear those Commands.

One or the other will not do; we must have both.

If we have faith in the Word of God but do not know what God is saying, our faith is like a drawn bow with no arrow. And if we know what God is saying but do not have faith, those divine words are like arrows in our hands with no bow from which to shoot them.

God has made His commands clear through the testimony of Scripture.

And when we follow His commands in the Bible, we will begin to hear His still small voice speaking to us individually as well. And with the faith of a child, we will be able to follow this voice wherever it leads - even if leads us to do what is impossible.

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,

“This is the way, walk in it,”

when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left

Isaiah 30:21
